Frequently Asked Questions

I have a larger boat. Can I convert it to electric?

Larger masses take more energy to move through the water at speed. That said, most larger boats can be set up for electric propulsion. That can be done by supplementing the charging system with an auxiliary generator. Although these will burn gas or diesel, the overall system will still be more efficient. Also, these systems can be used as fuel cell technology becomes more available.

How much on-going maintenance will be required for an electric boat.

Your maintenance will be much lower. Modern brushless motors will run without maintenance for years because they have few potential failure points. The same goes for LiFePO4 batteries with 4500 to 5000 charge cycles with an impressive 80% depth of charge. The main failure points will be in the charging system, such as diesel or gas generators which do require regular maintenance. However, modern solar panels have a projected lifespan of 20-25 years if they're kept clean and electrical connections are kept corrosion free
